Extraterrestrial Cultivation: Water and Food Security
Extraterrestrial Cultivation: Water and Food Security

In a move that could revolutionize its agricultural sector, Iran is setting its sights on extraterrestrial cultivation, aiming to tap into the water and soil resources of other countries to improve food security and expand its agricultural exports. This ambitious plan was discussed at the conference titled “Extraterrestrial Cultivation: Water and Food Security” at the Center for Development Research and Foresight.

The conference brought together experts from various fields to explore the potential and challenges of this emerging concept. Ali Kiani Rad, head of the Institute for Planning, Agricultural Economics and Rural Development, emphasized the distinction between "extraterrestrial cultivation," which refers solely to growing crops, and the broader concept of "extraterrestrial agriculture," which encompasses a wider range of activities such as livestock production and aquaculture. Iran's interest in extraterrestrial agriculture dates back to the 1980s, and in 2016, the government approved a bylaw to support its development. However, several challenges remain, including a lack of clear regulations, difficulty for farmers to invest in foreign land, and restrictions on accessing foreign currency.

Despite these hurdles, experts believe that the potential benefits of extraterrestrial agriculture are significant. Reza Fotouhi, advisor to the Minister of Agriculture, highlighted the importance of food security, noting that superiors have emphasized the importance of agriculture. He added that extraterrestrial agriculture could provide access to water and soil resources that are scarce in Iran, and also create opportunities to export agricultural technology and services.

The conference also explored solutions to address the challenges facing extraterrestrial agriculture. Fakhruddin Amerian, head of the Iranian Extraterrestrial Cultivation Association, called for creating an investment platform in target countries, establishing clear communication with countries that have suitable resources, and developing a long-term plan to address future needs. Additionally, providing support for foreign investors was identified as a key factor in attracting investment and expertise.

While the concept of extraterrestrial agriculture is still in its early stages in Iran, the recent meeting highlights the growing interest and potential of this approach. As Iran grapples with water scarcity and a growing population, extraterrestrial agriculture could offer a promising solution for ensuring food security and boosting its agricultural sector.
